{"id":197,"date":"2015-11-10T17:43:13","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T17:43:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/?page_id=197"},"modified":"2015-11-30T17:38:26","modified_gmt":"2015-11-30T17:38:26","slug":"nella-larsen-timeline","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/nella-larsen-timeline\/","title":{"rendered":"Nella Larsen Timeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Think of the timeline that we&#8217;re creating as a handy reader&#8217;s guide to Nella Larsen&#8217;s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Quicksand<\/span>. \u00a0The complete timeline &#8211; &#8211; with all six sub-timelines &#8211; &#8211; will allow readers to locate Larsen&#8217;s novel within broader contexts (like cultural and social history) and even to think about events within the novel in relation to these contexts.<\/p>\n<p>The final version of the timeline is due: Thursday, November 19.<\/p>\n<p>Each group is responsible for 12 -18 timeline entries.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll work on the timeline in three stages:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Collecting, selecting, and organizing entries for the timeline<\/li>\n<li>Creating timeline entries<\/li>\n<li>Publishing and fine-tuning our timeline.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stage 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each of your groups (<a href=\"#groups\">see below<\/a>) should create one collective google doc to start collecting and organizing information for your timeline. \u00a0(I&#8217;ve created one basic worksheet to help keep track of this phase of work. \u00a0You can find it <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/16j0KPMfE_1zNKDXck-KHYttdWDX7CsxAI17go6pATx4\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0To use it, copy it to your google docs. \u00a0E.g. under the &#8220;File&#8221; menu, click on &#8220;Copy.&#8221; \u00a0Rename the document with your group name and share it &#8211; &#8211; via the &#8220;Share&#8221; button &#8211; &#8211; \u00a0with your group members.)<\/p>\n<p>In this phase, you and your group will have to: decide what events will most help a reader to contextualize the novel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>find information to explain these events (Scour the web and any other sources that prove helpful &#8211; &#8211; including journal articles, books, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>draft the text for a timeline entry \u00a0(This should be more than a couple of sentences and should provide a rich context for the reader (e.g. each text entry should be at least 150 words). \u00a0You&#8217;ll also need to keep track of your sources as you will link to them from within the entry.);<\/li>\n<li>find visual or sound elements that will illustrate your entry;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Stage 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve collected, organized, written and designed your entries, you&#8217;ll have to start formatting all of this information for presentation via TimelineJS. \u00a0This means you&#8217;ll have to fill in spreadsheet data for each of your entries. \u00a0If you&#8217;ve been using the draft I&#8217;ve offered &#8211; &#8211; or even a spreadsheet, this should be pretty simple.
