{"id":219,"date":"2015-12-03T17:22:16","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T17:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/?page_id=219"},"modified":"2015-12-03T17:22:16","modified_gmt":"2015-12-03T17:22:16","slug":"networking-howl","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/networking-howl\/","title":{"rendered":"Networking &#8220;Howl&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Your two-page, typed essay is due on Thursday, December 10, at the beginning of class.<\/p>\n<p>Your goal in this assignment is to use Ginsberg&#8217;s &#8220;Howl&#8221; to show me what you&#8217;ve learned this semester.\u00a0 What does this mean?\u00a0 Similar to our &#8220;mystery text&#8221; assignment, your essay should show me the connections among &#8220;Howl&#8221; and the texts we&#8217;ve read over the course of our time together, i.e. your goal is &#8220;network&#8221; Ginsberg&#8217;s poem within our syllabus.\u00a0 Obviously, given the two page limit, you won&#8217;t have time to connect &#8220;Howl&#8221; to all these poems, essays, and fictions.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll have to be strategic about which connections you want to make and which will best demonstrate your learning, but you should be able to connect &#8220;Howl&#8221; to at least three texts.<\/p>\n<p>You can &#8220;network&#8221; Ginsberg&#8217;s poem through motifs, themes, and forms it shares with any text from our syllabus.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t feel that you have to provide a &#8220;reading&#8221; or grand interpretation of &#8220;Howl.&#8221;\u00a0 Instead, focus on finding and elaborating the ties that bind &#8220;Howl&#8221; to our other texts.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget: &#8220;Howl&#8221; may share common elements with another text but only to differ or even disagree with that text.\u00a0 In other words, the dialogue between texts may be salubrious; it can also be contentious and critical.<\/p>\n<p>As with our &#8220;mystery text&#8221; assignment, there&#8217;s no need for a thesis statement &#8211; &#8211; start explaining the connections you want to develop from the first sentence of the essay.<\/p>\n<p>Some other things to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One hopeful fruit of all the annotation that you\u2019ve been doing is a greater attention to and appreciation of the words on the page. \u00a0As you draft your essay, <strong>try to work inductively<\/strong> \u2013 \u2013 e.g. from the words\/phrases on the page up to more general meaning and significance. \u00a0Quote examples from the texts to illustrate and develop your ideas. \u00a0There\u2019s no need to use MLA citation for your sources \u2013 \u2013 instead, \u201cjust put the author\u2019s name in parentheses at the close of your quotation\u201d (Hanley). \u00a0 There\u2018s more than one way to quote a source, and <a href=\"https:\/\/writing.wisc.edu\/Handbook\/QuoLitIncorporating.html\">here\u2019s a quick introduction to various ways to handle quotation within your sentences<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Despite our compressed time frame, it\u2019s absolutely permissible to discuss, ponder, and plumb the assignment\u00a0 together in <strong>informal groups<\/strong>. \u00a0(I would encourage it.) \u00a0However, you must write your own essay.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to <strong>proofread<\/strong>. \u00a0As always, I will borrow the \u201cThree Strikes and You\u2019re Out\u201d rule from baseball. \u00a0After the second typographical, spelling, grammar, or usage error, I will stop reading your essay and evaluate what I\u2019ve read.<\/li>\n<li>If it helps, here\u2019s another way to think about this assignment: I\u2019m asking you to use the texts we\u2019ve already read to make sense of a new text, &#8220;Howl.&#8221;\u00a0 In other words, how do our class texts alert you to significant and interesting features of &#8220;Howl.&#8221;\u00a0 How well can you use our syllabus to \u201cread\u201d something new? \u00a0This gives you a chance to extend and reflect on what you know. \u00a0It gives me a chance to see how much you\u2019ve thought about the texts we\u2019ve read.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your two-page, typed essay is due on Thursday, December 10, at the beginning of class.
