{"id":124,"date":"2015-09-04T17:41:06","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T17:41:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/?p=124"},"modified":"2015-09-04T17:41:52","modified_gmt":"2015-09-04T17:41:52","slug":"for-tuesday-september-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/2015\/09\/04\/for-tuesday-september-8\/","title":{"rendered":"For Tuesday (September 8)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/09\/Rest-Cure.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-125\" src=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/09\/Rest-Cure-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"Rest Cure\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/09\/Rest-Cure-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/09\/Rest-Cure.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For next Tuesday, be sure to: \u00a01) read and annotate Charlotte Perkins Gilman&#8217;s short story, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/texts\/charlotte-perkins-gilman-the-yellow-wallpaper-1892\/\">The Yellow Wallpaper<\/a>&#8220;; 2) write down one instance of the &#8220;veil&#8221; motif in Du Bois and bring it to class.<\/p>\n<p>For the latter, Du Bois uses the actual term, &#8220;veil,&#8221; six times in his first chapter. \u00a0These are pretty obvious instances. \u00a0Can you find any less obvious or more figurative uses of the image of the &#8220;veil&#8221;? \u00a0For example, think about the first sentence of the chapter &#8211; &#8211; where the &#8220;unasked question&#8221; appears to function like a veil\u00a0&#8211; &#8211; or the use of &#8220;shadow,&#8221; &#8220;shades,&#8221; various kinds of darkness, etc. \u00a0Quote\u00a0from the Du Bois text, write that quote down on a piece of paper, and deliver that paper to class.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of things to think about as you read and annotate the Gilman story: 1) In &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/texts\/annotation-test\/\">The Dynamo and the Virgin<\/a>,&#8221; Adams sees the dynamo as representative of deeper, more sublime forces, forces that threaten his sense of order. \u00a0\u00a0Can you spot similar moments\u00a0of disruptive, sublime forces\u00a0in Gilman? 2) In &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/texts\/w-e-b-du-bois-of-our-spiritual-strivings\/\">Of Our Spiritual Strivings<\/a>,&#8221; Du Bois describes &#8220;[t]he shades of the prison-house clos[ing] round about us all.&#8221; \u00a0Can you spot similar images or descriptions of confinement &#8211; &#8211; literal, but especially figurative &#8211; &#8211; \u00a0in &#8220;The Yellow Wallpaper&#8221;? \u00a0Again, these are only suggestions &#8211; &#8211; your annotations are your thing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; For next Tuesday, be sure to: \u00a01) read and annotate Charlotte Perkins Gilman&#8217;s short story, &#8220;The Yellow Wallpaper&#8220;; 2) write down one instance of the &#8220;veil&#8221; motif in Du Bois and bring it to class.
