Character Traits

Character traits are qualities that refer to behavior, personality, and beliefs.  “Tall” or “bald,” for instance, are not character traits in and of themselves.  (“Tall” and or “bald” people can be ambitious, lazy, saturnine, etc.).  Often, however, a writer may work to associate physical appearance with character traits.  For instance, “squat” and “ruddy” are physical descriptors – – however, when linked to Lenehan’s character traits in “Two Gallants,” these physical descriptors can echo or underscore character traits like “sleazy” or “unseemly.”

Below, you’ll find a list of some typical character traits.  The list is not comprehensive; it’s only intended to give you an idea of the kinds of qualities we think of as character traits.
