that you understand how character traits and setting in prose fiction are organized (via binary opposition) into character and setting systems; that you can use these oppositions to connect <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">this excerpt<\/a> from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dubliners<\/span> to the character system that spans Joyce\u2019s short story collection.<\/p>\n<p>Your final draft of the assignment will consist of three parts (each clearly titled and presented in its own section):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>part one<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/13NewolBZBR2k5auRNuVcJFaal71-QS_ziPryF58fDwI\/edit?usp=sharing\">a coding<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">the excerpt<\/a> for characterization (modes and traits) and setting.\u00a0 This should be done by writing on\/marking up the excerpt.<\/li>\n<li><strong>part two<\/strong>: an analysis of <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">the excerpt<\/a> that organizes character traits and setting elements into patterns of binary opposition, i.e. a character\/setting system &#8211; &#8211; this can be done through columns and lists (i.e. without writing, paragraphs, sentences, etc.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>part three<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>a typed, written explanation (no more than two pages) that connects <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">this excerpt<\/a> to the character system of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dubliners<\/span>.\u00a0 Here, you want to explain <strong>how <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">this excerpt<\/a> repeats or develops character trait patterns and oppositions<\/strong> that we\u2019ve seen in \u201cAn Encounter,\u201d \u201cTwo Gallants,\u201d \u201cA Little Cloud,\u201d and\/or \u201cAraby.\u201d \u00a0Probably, the most efficient way to accomplish this is to focus on tracing one important binary opposition across <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">the excerpt<\/a> and <strong>two or more stories. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>a typed, written explanation that connects the delineation of setting in <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">this excerpt<\/a> to other semiotic and thematic organizations of setting in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dubliners<\/span>.\u00a0 \u00a0Probably, the most efficient way to accomplish this is to focus on tracing one important binary opposition across <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english480fa2019\/from-a-little-cloud\/\">the excerpt<\/a> and<strong> two or more stories<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(<strong>Bonus points<\/strong>\u00a0if, a la Fiske, you can explain how this binary in fact represents a cultural or social conflict central to\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Dubliners<\/span>.)<\/p>\n<p>This assignment is due Thursday, November 14, at the start of class.\u00a0 As usual, the three-strikes-and-you\u2019re-out rule applies.\u00a0 Questions?\u00a0 Let me know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your goal in this assignment is to show me: that you know how to analyze prose fiction for characterization and setting;
