{"id":36,"date":"2017-08-30T17:46:31","date_gmt":"2017-08-30T17:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2017-08-30T17:46:31","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T17:46:31","slug":"annotating-with-hypothesis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/annotating-with-hypothesis\/","title":{"rendered":"Annotating with Hypothesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>How to annotate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you&#8217;ll need to do to start annotating online. \u00a0For demonstration purposes, I&#8217;ll use Levine&#8217;s poem as the prime example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, go to the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/phil-levine-they-feed-they-lion-1972\/\">They Feed They Lion<\/a>&#8221; page (or, depending on your group, to the <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/natalie-diaz-when-my-brother-was-an-aztec-2012\/\">Natalie Diaz page<\/a>). \u00a0On that page, you&#8217;ll notice a small but odd set of icons in the upper right-hand corner. \u00a0They look like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-103\" src=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled1-300x149.jpeg\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"300\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Click on the little &#8220;&lt;&#8221; symbol and a drawer will slide out. \u00a0It will look like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled-2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-104\" src=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled-2-300x167.jpeg\" alt=\"Untitled 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since you probably don&#8217;t have an account on Hypothesis, our annotation tool, you&#8217;ll have to create one. \u00a0Click on the &#8220;Create an account&#8221; button and fill in your details:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled-3.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-105\" src=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/files\/2015\/08\/Untitled-3-265x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Untitled 3\" width=\"265\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>N.B. When you choose a username &#8211; &#8211; choose a name that I will recognize. \u00a0E.g. &#8220;LHanley&#8221; is going to make life a lot easier for me than &#8220;MadProfX,&#8221; etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve created an account and logged into the Hypothesis sidebar (on the Levine page), you&#8217;re ready to start annotating. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hypothes.is\/welcome\">Here are the basics for how to mark text and add comments<\/a>. (Don&#8217;t worry about mention of the &#8220;extension&#8221; \u00a0&#8211; &#8211; that&#8217;s already been installed on the motherblog.) \u00a0Make at least two annotations and at least two replies to existing annotations. \u00a0<strong>N.B. \u00a0Make sure your annotations are set to &#8220;public,&#8221; so that we can all read them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t stress if things seem clumsy or awkward at first. \u00a0The more you practice, the more natural &#8211; &#8211; and easier &#8211; &#8211; \u00a0annotation will become. \u00a0E.g. relax and just start commenting on Levine&#8217;s or Diaz&#8217;s poem.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re all set now. \u00a0Go forth and annotate. \u00a0(Questions?
