{"id":139,"date":"2017-11-01T17:08:07","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T17:08:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/?p=139"},"modified":"2017-11-01T17:08:07","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T17:08:07","slug":"for-thursday-112","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/2017\/11\/01\/for-thursday-112\/","title":{"rendered":"For Thursday (11\/2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"https:\/\/www.massmoments.org\/files\/assets\/moments\/01-13-1832\/01_13.1_1834.jpg\" width=\"353\" height=\"527\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For Thursday, we&#8217;ll meet in the computer lab (HUM 401) to experiment with not reading\u00a0 Horatio Alger (or any author).<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for not-reading:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>first, open up a document or grab a pad and pen to take notes on each step in our not-reading.\u00a0 You should also save interesting Voyant results and Ngram views.<\/li>\n<li>check out the Wikipedia page on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Horatio_Alger\">Alger<\/a> so you can get some sense of who he is and what his books are like.<\/li>\n<li>head over to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/ebooks\/search\/?query=horatio+alger\">gutenberg.org<\/a> and download the text file for one of Alger&#8217;s novels. (I&#8217;ve already started on\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Train Boy<\/span> &#8211; &#8211; so you&#8217;ll have to choose a different novel.)<\/li>\n<li>clean up the text file by eliminating all of the gutenberg.org headers and footers and extraneous text, such as publication or publisher info, ads, etc.<\/li>\n<li>upload your clean text as a .txt file to <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/0BxkM7d2fD2tPNGtjNEhVSWtDRmc?usp=sharing\">our shared Alger folder<\/a> on Google and to Voyant Tools.<\/li>\n<li>analyze the Alger text with as many Voyant tools as you can.\u00a0 Keep notes on what you discover.\u00a0 Since we already know something about Alger from Wikipedia, try to use this information to locate patterns in the novel.<\/li>\n<li>next, download\/upload all of the texts in our Alger folder to Voyant Tools.\u00a0 Test your patterns against this larger corpus.<\/li>\n<li>finally, explore the wider contexts for these patterns through <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/ngrams\">Google&#8217;s Ngram Viewer<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you&#8217;ve finished not-reading your Alger novel, write a reflective blog post that answers a couple of questions as fully as possible: what did you learn about your novel through your distant reading? what did you learn about distant (and\/or close) reading by not-reading Alger?\u00a0 Use images and charts from your Voyant\/Ngram analyses to illustrate your insights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Thursday, we&#8217;ll meet in the computer lab (HUM 401) to experiment with not reading\u00a0 Horatio Alger (or any author).
