{"id":53,"date":"2017-09-06T19:07:02","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T19:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/?p=53"},"modified":"2017-09-06T19:07:59","modified_gmt":"2017-09-06T19:07:59","slug":"for-thursday-97","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/2017\/09\/06\/for-thursday-97\/","title":{"rendered":"For Thursday (9\/7)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimhosting.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"https:\/\/reclaimhosting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/30204902\/Reclaim-Hosting-logo-v2-reversed-1024x1024-620x620.png\" width=\"355\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Thursday, we&#8217;ll want to do two things <strong>when we meet in HUM 401<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>First<\/strong>, keep working on your poem annotations. \u00a0The next step in building super-rich multimedia texts from your poem is to return to the V. 2.0 pages &#8211; &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/phil-levine-they-feed-they-lion-1972-version-2-0\/\">Levine<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english495\/natalie-diaz-when-my-brother-was-an-aztec-2012-version-2-0\/\">Diaz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Reply to each of your original annotations by describing the purpose of the annotation &#8211; &#8211; to encourage readers to think about connections between industrial life and the landscape of &#8220;They Feed They Lion&#8221; or to spark readers&#8217; questions about the relation between Aztec rituals and the actions of the characters in Diaz&#8217;s &#8220;When My Brother Was an Aztec&#8221; or etc. \u00a0Your description of your purpose shouldn&#8217;t be more than a sentence of two. \u00a0Remember, what you&#8217;re trying to think about is what you want your annotation to do to or for a reader and their experience of the poem.<\/li>\n<li>In a second reply, rewrite your first annotation. \u00a0Again, the idea here is to find the sweet spot <strong>between<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">telling<\/span> a reader the meaning of the poem&#8217;s language, image, etc. and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">guiding<\/span> the reader to think about the poem in new or deeper ways. \u00a0Your second, revised annotation should invite the reader to engage with the poem in new contexts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Second<\/strong>, you&#8217;ll start setting up a domain of your own. \u00a0These domains will be hosted at <a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimhosting.com\/\">Reclaim Hosting<\/a>. \u00a0You&#8217;ll need to bring a credit card (or PayPal account info) to class to pay for your new domain ($30\/year). \u00a0To get ready to rock n&#8217; roll with your domain, you might want to do a couple of things before class:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>think about your preferred domain name, e.g. &#8220;teaching.lfhanley.net&#8221; or &#8220;postpunk.org&#8221; or etc. \u00a0Think about a domain name that: you can carry forward out of our class; and, a domain name that might signify something about your domain. \u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/126670\/the-difference-between-.com-.net-.org-and-why-were-about-to-see-many-more-top-level-domains\/\">Which suffix to use &#8211; &#8211; .net, .com., .org?<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>surf over to Reclaim Hosting and look at their hosting plans. \u00a0Generally, we&#8217;ll be using their &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/reclaimhosting.com\/shared-hosting\/\">shared hosting<\/a>&#8221; plan. \u00a0You can even buy your domain before class, if you wish.<\/li>\n<li>once you&#8217;ve secured your domain, you&#8217;ll want to install WordPress, the open source blog platform\/engine. \u00a0Reclaim has a pretty good tutorial about <a href=\"https:\/\/community.reclaimhosting.com\/t\/installing-wordpress\/265\">how to install WordPress<\/a> into your domain. \u00a0(We&#8217;ll actually install WordPress into <a href=\"https:\/\/community.reclaimhosting.com\/t\/subdomains-and-subfolders\/268\">a subdomain<\/a> &#8211; &#8211; so hold off on installing WordPress until you get to class.)
