Reading Journal

In class on Thursday, we decided to use Google Docs as our reading journal platform (for now).  Here’s how to set up your reading journal on Google Docs:

  • first, create a new google doc and title it – – “[Your Name] Reading Journal” (If you don’t have a google account, you’ll need to create one.)
  • next, set up the google doc for sharing with me.  In your google doc, click on the “Share” box in the upper right-hand corner.  When the sharing window pops up, click on “Change to anyone with link” (right under the “Get link” line).  Change the sharing option from “Viewer” to “Commenter.” Then, click on the “Copy link.”  This is the link you’ll send to me at profhanley@gmail.com.

Here’s a pretty comprehensive “how-to” on sharing google docs:

  • now, you have to create the content of the reading journal.  Go to our Reading Journal template here.  Select and copy all – – either by dragging the cursor over the whole table or just using the “select all” command.  Paste the table into your new google doc (the one you titled “[Your Name] Reading Journal”).
  • make your first entry by filling in the table.  When you make your next entry, simply copy and paste the table again and enter your responses to the next story you’ve discovered.  (You might want to  insert a page break after each entry by putting your cursor at the bottom of your last entry, clicking on the “Insert” menu, scrolling down to “Break” and then clicking on “Page break” – – but this is optional.)  Rinse and repeat.

Once you’ve set up the document sharing and emailed the sharing link to me, the rest should be pretty straightforward.  But, if you have any questions or issues or etc., let me know.  Enjoy!
