{"id":54,"date":"2015-08-25T03:21:30","date_gmt":"2015-08-25T03:21:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/eng528f15\/?page_id=54"},"modified":"2015-08-25T03:21:30","modified_gmt":"2015-08-25T03:21:30","slug":"william-carlos-williams","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528fa17\/texts\/william-carlos-williams\/","title":{"rendered":"William Carlos Williams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>&#8220;To Elsie&#8221; (1923)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pure products of America<br \/>\ngo crazy\u2014<br \/>\nmountain folk from Kentucky<\/p>\n<p>or the ribbed north end of<br \/>\nJersey<br \/>\nwith its isolate lakes and<\/p>\n<p>valleys, its deaf-mutes, thieves<br \/>\nold names<br \/>\nand promiscuity between<\/p>\n<p>devil-may-care men who have taken<br \/>\nto railroading<br \/>\nout of sheer lust of adventure\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and young slatterns, bathed<br \/>\nin filth<br \/>\nfrom Monday to Saturday<\/p>\n<p>to be tricked out that night<br \/>\nwith gauds<br \/>\nfrom imaginations which have no<\/p>\n<p>peasant traditions to give them<br \/>\ncharacter<br \/>\nbut flutter and flaunt<\/p>\n<p>sheer rags-succumbing without<br \/>\nemotion<br \/>\nsave numbed terror<\/p>\n<p>under some hedge of choke-cherry<br \/>\nor viburnum-<br \/>\nwhich they cannot express\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Unless it be that marriage<br \/>\nperhaps<br \/>\nwith a dash of Indian blood<\/p>\n<p>will throw up a girl so desolate<br \/>\nso hemmed round<br \/>\nwith disease or murder<\/p>\n<p>that she&#8217;ll be rescued by an<br \/>\nagent\u2014<br \/>\nreared by the state and<\/p>\n<p>sent out at fifteen to work in<br \/>\nsome hard-pressed<br \/>\nhouse in the suburbs\u2014<\/p>\n<p>some doctor&#8217;s family, some Elsie\u2014<br \/>\nvoluptuous water<br \/>\nexpressing with broken<\/p>\n<p>brain the truth about us\u2014<br \/>\nher great<br \/>\nungainly hips and flopping breasts<\/p>\n<p>addressed to cheap<br \/>\njewelry<br \/>\nand rich young men with fine eyes<\/p>\n<p>as if the earth under our feet<br \/>\nwere<br \/>\nan excrement of some sky<\/p>\n<p>and we degraded prisoners<br \/>\ndestined<br \/>\nto hunger until we eat filth<\/p>\n<p>while the imagination strains<br \/>\nafter deer<br \/>\ngoing by fields of goldenrod in<\/p>\n<p>the stifling heat of September<br \/>\nSomehow<br \/>\nit seems to destroy us<\/p>\n<p>It is only in isolate flecks that<br \/>\nsomething<br \/>\nis given off<\/p>\n<p>No one<br \/>\nto witness<br \/>\nand adjust, no one to drive the car<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;This is just to say&#8221; (1934)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I have eaten<br \/>\nthe plums<br \/>\nthat were in<br \/>\nthe icebox<\/p>\n<p>and which<br \/>\nyou were probably<br \/>\nsaving<br \/>\nfor breakfast<\/p>\n<p>Forgive me<br \/>\nthey were delicious<br \/>\nso sweet<br \/>\nand so cold<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Poor&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By constantly tormenting them<br \/>\nwith reminders of the lice in<br \/>\ntheir children&#8217;s hair, the<br \/>\nSchool Physician first<br \/>\nbrought their hatred down on him.<br \/>\nBut by this familiarity<br \/>\nthey grew used to him, and so,<br \/>\nat last,<br \/>\ntook him for their friend and adviser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Spring and All&#8221; (1923)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By the road to the contagious hospital<br \/>\nunder the surge of the blue<br \/>\nmottled clouds driven from the<br \/>\nnortheast\u2014a cold wind. Beyond, the<br \/>\nwaste of broad, muddy fields<br \/>\nbrown with dried weeds, standing and fallen<\/p>\n<p>patches of standing water<br \/>\nthe scattering of tall trees<\/p>\n<p>All along the road the reddish<br \/>\npurplish, forked, upstanding, twiggy<br \/>\nstuff of bushes and small trees<br \/>\nwith dead, brown leaves under them<br \/>\nleafless vines\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Lifeless in appearance, sluggish<br \/>\ndazed spring approaches\u2014<\/p>\n<p>They enter the new world naked,<br \/>\ncold, uncertain of all<br \/>\nsave that they enter.
