I see the shapes of girls who pass<br \/>\nTo bend and barter at desire&#8217;s call.<br \/>\nAh, little dark girls who in slippered feet<br \/>\nGo prowling through the night from street to street!<\/p>\n<p>Through the long night until the silver break<br \/>\nOf day the little gray feet know no rest;<br \/>\nThrough the lone night until the last snow-flake<br \/>\nHas dropped from heaven upon the earth&#8217;s white breast,<br \/>\nThe dusky, half-clad girls of tired feet<br \/>\nAre trudging, thinly shod, from street to street.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, stern harsh world, that in the wretched way<br \/>\nOf poverty, dishonor and disgrace,<br \/>\nHas pushed the timid little feet of clay,<br \/>\nThe sacred brown feet of my fallen race!<br \/>\nAh, heart of me, the weary, weary feet<br \/>\nIn Harlem wandering from street to street.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I Shall Return&#8221; (1922)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I SHALL return again; I shall return<br \/>\nTo laugh and love and watch with wonder-eyes<br \/>\nAt golden noon the forest fires burn,<br \/>\nWafting their blue-black smoke to sapphire skies.<br \/>\nI shall return to loiter by the streams<br \/>\nThat bathe the brown blades of the bending grasses,<br \/>\nAnd realize once more my thousand dreams<br \/>\nOf waters rushing down the mountain passes.<br \/>\nI shall return to hear the fiddle and fife<br \/>\nOf village dances, dear delicious tunes<br \/>\nThat stir the hidden depths of native life,<br \/>\nStray melodies of dim remembered runes.<br \/>\nI shall return, I shall return again,<br \/>\nTo ease my mind of long, long years of pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;America&#8221; (1921)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,<br \/>\nAnd sinks into my throat her tiger&#8217;s tooth,<br \/>\nStealing my breath of life, I will confess<br \/>\nI love this cultured hell that tests my youth.<br \/>\nHer vigor flows like tides into my blood,<br \/>\nGiving me strength erect against her hate,<br \/>\nHer bigness sweeps my being like a flood.<br \/>\nYet, as a rebel fronts a king in state,<br \/>\nI stand within her walls with not a shred<br \/>\nOf terror, malice, not a word of jeer.<br \/>\nDarkly I gaze into the days ahead,<br \/>\nAnd see her might and granite wonders there,<br \/>\nBeneath the touch of Time&#8217;s unerring hand,<br \/>\nLike priceless treasures sinking in the sand.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Harlem Shadows&#8221; (1922) I hear the halting footsteps of a lass In Negro Harlem when the night lets fall Its veil.
