Bennett"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"copy-paste-block\">\n<a name=\"wptoc_0_0_0\"><\/a><h2>To Usward (1924)<\/h2>\n<p>Let us be still<br \/>\nAs ginger jars are still<br \/>\nUpon a Chinese shelf.<br \/>\nAnd let us be contained<br \/>\nBy entities of Self \u2026<br \/>\nNot still with lethargy and sloth,<br \/>\nBut quiet with the pushing of our growth.<br \/>\nNot self-contained with smug identity<br \/>\nBut conscious of the strength in entity.<br \/>\nIf any have a song to sing<br \/>\nThat\u2019s different from the rest,<br \/>\nOh let them sing<br \/>\nBefore the urgency of Youth\u2019s behest!<br \/>\nFor some of us have songs to sing<br \/>\nOf jungle heat and fires,<br \/>\nAnd some of us are solemn grown<br \/>\nWith pitiful desires,<br \/>\nAnd there are those who feel the pull<br \/>\nOf seas beneath the skies,<br \/>\nAnd some there be who want to croon<br \/>\nOf Negro lullabies.<br \/>\nWe claim no part with racial dearth;<br \/>\nWe want to sing the songs of birth!<br \/>\nAnd so we stand like ginger jars<br \/>\nLike ginger jars bound round<br \/>\nWith dust and age;<br \/>\nLike jars of ginger we are sealed<br \/>\nBy nature\u2019s heritage.<br \/>\nBut let us break the seal of years<br \/>\nWith pungent thrusts of song,<br \/>\nFor there is joy in long-dried tears<br \/>\nFor whetted passions of a throng!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"copy-paste-block\">\n<a name=\"wptoc_0_0_1\"><\/a><h2>Heritage (1923)<\/h2>\n<p>I want to see the slim palm-trees,<br \/>\nPulling at the clouds<br \/>\nWith little pointed fingers \u2026<br \/>\nI want to see lithe Negro girls,<br \/>\nEtched dark against the sky<br \/>\nWhile sunset lingers.<br \/>\nI want to hear the silent sands,<br \/>\nSinging to the moon<br \/>\nBefore the Sphinx-still face \u2026<br \/>\nI want to hear the chanting<br \/>\nAround a heathen fire<br \/>\nOf a strange black race.<br \/>\nI want to breathe the Lotus flow\u2019r,<br \/>\nSighing to the stars<br \/>\nWith tendrils drinking at the Nile \u2026<br \/>\nI want to feel the surging<br \/>\nOf my sad people\u2019s soul<br \/>\nHidden by a minstrel-smile.<\/p>\n<div class=\"copy-paste-block\">\n<a name=\"wptoc_0_0_2\"><\/a><h2>Song (1926)<\/h2>\n<p>I am weaving a song of waters,<br \/>\nShaken from firm, brown limbs,<br \/>\nOr heads thrown back in irreverent mirth.<br \/>\nMy song has the lush sweetness<br \/>\nOf moist, dark lips<br \/>\nWhere hymns keep company<br \/>\nWith old forgotten banjo songs.<br \/>\nAbandon tells you<br \/>\nThat I sing the heart of race<br \/>\nWhile sadness whispers<br \/>\nThat I am the cry of a soul \u2026<br \/>\nA-shoutin\u2019 in de ole camp-meeting-place,<br \/>\nA-strummin\u2019 o\u2019 de ole banjo.<br \/>\nSingin\u2019 in de moonlight,<br \/>\nSobbin\u2019 in de dark.<br \/>\nSingin\u2019, sobbin\u2019, strummin\u2019 slow \u2026<br \/>\nSingin\u2019 slow, sobbin\u2019 low.<br \/>\nStrummin\u2019, strummin\u2019, strummin\u2019 slow \u2026<br \/>\nWords are bright bugles<br \/>\nThat make the shining for my song,<br \/>\nAnd mothers hold down babies<br \/>\nTo dark, warm breasts<br \/>\nTo make my singing sad.<br \/>\nA dancing girl with swaying hips<br \/>\nSets mad the queen in the harlot\u2019s eye.<br \/>\nPraying slave<br \/>\nJazz-band after<br \/>\nBreaking heart<br \/>\nTo the time of laughter \u2026<br \/>\nClinking chains and minstrelsy<br \/>\nAre wedged fast with melody.<br \/>\nA praying slave<br \/>\nWith a jazz-band after \u2026<br \/>\nSingin\u2019 slow, sobbin\u2019 low.<br \/>\nSun-baked lips will kiss the earth.<br \/>\nThroats of bronze will burst with mirth.<br \/>\nSing a little faster,<br \/>\nSing a little faster,<br \/>\nSing!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To Usward (1924) Let us be still As ginger jars are still Upon a Chinese shelf.
