{"id":740,"date":"2020-03-30T21:30:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-30T21:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528sp2020\/?p=740"},"modified":"2020-04-02T20:00:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T20:00:30","slug":"for-tuesday-3-31-and-thursday-4-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528sp2020\/2020\/03\/30\/for-tuesday-3-31-and-thursday-4-2\/","title":{"rendered":"For Tuesday (3\/31) and Thursday (4\/2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"My Corona by Chris Mann\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ojrtwXqqc6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So, here we are.\u00a0 I\u00a0 hope you are all healthy, securely housed, and making the best of a very bad situation.\u00a0 We have to\u00a0 carry on.<\/p>\n<p>For this week, let&#8217;s do a motif hunt in Eliot&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528sp2020\/texts\/t-s-eliot-2\/\">The Waste Land<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0 \u00a0What is a motif hunt?\u00a0 I explain the basics in the first annotation on our new &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528sp2020\/texts\/t-s-eliot-2\/\">Waste Land<\/a>&#8221; page.\u00a0 Below, you&#8217;ll find a recap:<\/p>\n<p>First, listen to this recording &#8211; &#8211; better if you listen to it on the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english528sp2020\/texts\/t-s-eliot-2\/\">Waste Land<\/a>&#8221; page so that you can see the epigraph that I&#8217;m talking about:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-740-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/feeds.soundcloud.com\/stream\/787092007-lawrence-hanley-wastelandepigraph.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/feeds.soundcloud.com\/stream\/787092007-lawrence-hanley-wastelandepigraph.mp3\">https:\/\/feeds.soundcloud.com\/stream\/787092007-lawrence-hanley-wastelandepigraph.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>In the little recording, I use the epigraph to point to a bunch of motifs in &#8220;The Waste Land.&#8221; These include:<\/p>\n<p>* voices<br \/>\n* text as plagiarism\/remix<br \/>\n* zombies (neither this nor that; both this and that;mixing)<br \/>\n* un\/natural time<br \/>\n* desire frustrated<br \/>\n* exile<br \/>\n* fragments<br \/>\n* dry\/wet (not in the epigraph but related to fragments and the un\/natural)<br \/>\n* women and men<\/p>\n<p>Your mission, should you accept it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>choose <strong>an excerpt (<\/strong>five to ten lines<strong>)<\/strong> from at least two of the four remaining sections of the poem (&#8220;A Game of Chess,&#8221; &#8220;The Fire Sermon,&#8221; &#8220;Death by Water,&#8221; &#8220;What the Thunder Said&#8221;), i.e. you can choose which of the four sections you want to work with, but you must choose an excerpt from two different sections of the poem;<\/li>\n<li>use hypothesis to digitally annotate each of your two selected sections and use your digital annotations to show me how many of the motifs from the list above you can find in each of your two excerpts (super bonus points for those who can find the most motifs in any particular excerpt);<\/li>\n<li>in each of your annotations &#8211; &#8211; explain how the motif appears, how it differs from one excerpt to the next,\u00a0 and speculate on the significance of the motif<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The final version of your motif hunt will be due on Thursday, April 2, at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Questions?\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:profhanley@gmail.com\"> Email me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, here we are.\u00a0 I\u00a0 hope you are all healthy, securely housed, and making the best of a very bad situation.\u00a0 We have to\u00a0 carry on.
