{"id":91,"date":"2012-02-17T20:22:15","date_gmt":"2012-02-17T20:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english630sp12\/?p=91"},"modified":"2012-02-17T20:23:21","modified_gmt":"2012-02-17T20:23:21","slug":"tuesday-221","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/teaching.lfhanley.net\/english630sp12\/2012\/02\/17\/tuesday-221\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday (2\/21)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kkI4d9u-f3c?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For our next virtual class:<\/p>\n<p>Whitman didn&#8217;t so much produce a book of poetry, Leaves of Grass, as an ongoing iteration of a poem and book. \u00a0Leaves of Grass is more like a &#8220;versioned&#8221; text (LoG 1.0, LoG 2.0, etc.) than a stable, finished document. \u00a0Let&#8217;s explore a bit of this de-re-composing process.<\/p>\n<p>For Tuesday:<\/p>\n<p>1) compare the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass to <a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/LG\/1860\/index.html\">the 1860 edition<\/a>. \u00a0What significant changes to the whole volume &#8211; &#8211; the whole collection &#8211; &#8211; do you notice? \u00a0What do these changes tell us about how Whitman was rethinking his poems and his ambition? \u00a0Do you notice any significant changes to &#8220;Song of Myself&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>2) the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/1860-Blue_book\/images\/leaf002r.html\">blue book<\/a>&#8221; version of the 1860 Leaves of Grass is full of Whitman&#8217;s own annotations and emendations. Focusing on &#8220;Song of Myself,&#8221; look for several high activity zones &#8211; &#8211; places where Whitman is scribbling and striking out and adding a lot, pages full of pencil marks. \u00a0Having located a couple of high activity zones, take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/LG\/1867\/index.html\">the next edition of Leaves of Grass &#8211; &#8211; 1867<\/a>. \u00a0What big changes &#8211; &#8211; additions, re-organzations &#8211; &#8211; do you notice to the new edition? Focusing on the zones you&#8217;ve discovered in the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/1860-Blue_book\/images\/leaf002r.html\">blue book<\/a>,&#8221; what&#8217;s happened to the changes Whitman pencilled in <a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/LG\/1860\/index.html\">his previous 1860 edition<\/a>? \u00a0Has he made all the changes he marked in the &#8220;blue book&#8221;? \u00a0What difference do these changes make to <a href=\"http:\/\/whitmanarchive.org\/published\/LG\/1867\/index.html\">the 1867 version of &#8220;Song of Myself&#8221;<\/a>? \u00a0How has the poem changed from it&#8217;s original 1855 version?<\/p>\n<p>Blog your answers and reflections!<\/p>\n<p>3) \u00a0don&#8217;t forget our tweet-of-the-week: &#8220;Bowery b&#8217;hoy.&#8221; \u00a0(Always available first through out tweetstream: #whitmansfsu.
