For Thursday (3/8)

For Thursday, let’s read some poetry by Langston Hughes. I’m particularly interested in how Hughes tries to broker a marriage between poetry (a “high,” literary genre) and jazz/blues (more “low-down” genres). Where do you see “jazzy” or “bluesy” elements in Hughes’s poetry – – not just in content but also in form. Make three digital annotations in total.
Don’t forget our Ecstasy of Plagiarism assignment. On that topic, Tyler emailed me to ask about how best to represent fragments in the google doc. Here’s what I replied:
Ideally, if the fragment is heard or seen (rather than read/written), it would be great to include the clip, image, video, etc. Unfortunately, google docs doesn’t make it easy to embed audio or video. There are workarounds: how to embed a video; and, how to embed an audio file. You can also simply link to YouTube videos or any other material.
Here is what I would do at a minimum: quote/transcribe the dialogue or song lyric and then link to the video or audio file for that fragment. I.e.: “Charlton Heston shouts to those gathered around him: ‘Soylent Green is people!‘”
You can easily insert images into documents – – just go to the “Insert” menu in a google doc, click on the menu and choose “Image.” Google docs will let you upload an image from your computer, search for the image on the web, find the image in your google photos, etc. You can then reposition the image in your doc, change its size, add a label etc.
