For Monday (4/29)

Onward with Twine!

For Monday, two things:

First, bring in a copy of the short story that you want to twine.  Remember, this should be a “canonical” short story (i.e. by a writer that’s well-known like Hawthorne, Poe, Joyce, Hemingway, Chekov, etc.).  It should also be a story that you like.  And, keep in mind that using a story with a “plot of resolution” – – where the narrative follows a pretty clear sequence of story events – – might make the story more amenable to a twining.

Second, we want to finish up twining “Young Goodman Brown.”  Each of your groups has split the sequence of story events in Hawthorne’s story into sequences of three or four story events.  And, each of you is responsible for creating twine passages for the grouping assigned to you.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind as you work on your assigned passages:

  1. How will you contextualize your story event for your reader/player?  It’s not enough to simply label the passage with the story event title and a choice.  For your twined version of Hawthorne’s tale, you need to make it clear to the reader what’s at stake in your passage.  I.e. how does the story define the situation and choices for Goodman Brown?  Remember, you are remixing and re-presenting Hawthorne’s story – – in Chatman’s terms, you are discoursing a basic kernel/story event into a new plot version.
  2. You will want to multi-mediate your passage.  This means adding images and/or sound to your passage.  Every multimedia element must be intentional and purposeful; you should be able to explain why you selected a particular image and/or sound for this passage.  Think carefully about the relations among story event, your twine-passage version of that event, and how you want your reader/player to experience your passage.  This is your chance to create a real, new aesthetic experience for your reader/player.  Make that experience both pleasurable and meaningful.

Bring your twined passages to class on Monday to share with your group comrades.  If you have questions or glitches, your first resort should be to the Twine help that I’ve linked to on our motherblog.

Enjoy!
